Storing Your Porsche Taycan

A few weeks ago we were fortunate enough to be invited to a Porsche Taycan tech demo at Porsche San Diego and The PCA San Diego Region. Thank you to both parties for organizing!

Our primary interest in going was to see what it would be like to store these new cars for a long period of time. Luckily, I was able to chat with the shop foreman and head mechanic to learn all about this cutting-edge car.

As you may know, the Taycan is Porsche’s first attempt at a fully electric vehicle. It’s designed to compete at the super high end, even cresting top tier Tesla models in price.

Here is what we learned about the car as related to long term storage and care:

1.     The 12v Battery Is Charged Along Side the Traction Battery- It looks like the the Tacyan has a standard 12 volt battery that works along side the bigger traction batteries. Most new electric cars are designed in this way. The 12v handles a lot of the functions when the car is off and powers the radio, dash, etc. The good news for storage is that the two systems are integrated…which means that if you charge your Taycan, the current will automatically condition your 12v battery as well!

2.     110 Volts Is Best For Long Term Charging- Many electric car owners will charge their cars overnight using a 220v outlet for a faster ‘fill-up’ of the battery. The Tesla superchargers are 480 volts! However in order to preserve a Tacyan’s battery longevity, Porsche of San Diego recommends long term charging at 110v as it is a gentler amount of power going into the battery. The higher the voltage the more damage the charging will cause over time.

3.     Maintenance Free For The First Two Years- When customers store normal ICE (Internal Combustion) cars, they often ask about fluid change intervals…"do the fluid go bad if they sit?". On the Taycan it looks like the first service isn’t due for the FIRST TWO YEARS…Which means that likely there is not much service to do on any of the systems within the car. It is possible that the inverter/ battery coolant should be changed on some interval, but most electric car manufacturers claim this is a life time fluid.

Whether you store your Taycan with us, someone else professionally, or put it in your garage for the winter, we hope this was helpful!
